Background

Development implementation has generally tended to prioritize economic growth while neglecting environmental and social dimensions. This condition has given rise to various serious problems, such as global warming and climate change, which continue to persist and negatively impact human survival. In the era of globalization, environmental aspects have become a strategic consideration in various development activities, including meeting economic needs, implementing regional autonomy, and national development. The global commitment in responding to climate change issues is reflected in the Paris Agreement, which affirms the importance of collective efforts to reduce the rate of global warming. In Indonesia, environmental protection and management has been regulated under Law Number 32 of 2009. This demonstrates that environmental management is a shared responsibility requiring support from various parties, including through higher education. Based on these conditions, there are several key points that form the basis for developing education in the environmental field, namely:

1. Imbalance between economic, environmental, and social development
2. Growing global threats such as climate change
3. The existence of international commitments in addressing environmental issues
4. Strengthening of national regulations in the field of environmental management
5. The need for competent human resources in the environmental sector

Role of the Study Program

In response to these challenges, the Doctoral Program in Environmental Science was established to meet the need for human resources with high competency in environmental management and sustainable development. The program officially obtained its operating license based on the Decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education Number 2782/D/T/2008. From its inception, the study program was designed with a multidisciplinary approach to understand and address various increasingly complex environmental problems. In its development, the study program has demonstrated a strong commitment to improving educational quality, as reflected in its achievement of an Excellent (A) accreditation from BAN-PT for several consecutive periods. Supported by competent teaching staff and a curriculum based on research and global issues, the Doctoral Program in Environmental Science continues to grow as a center of excellence in the development of science and technology in the environmental field, and contributes to achieving sustainable development.
